Preparation
- Start with fresh popcorn! If you have an air popper, follow the instructions. If not, use a brown paper bag and a microwave: add the kernels, fold the bag, and zap for 2-3 minutes, until popping slows to a 5-second gap.
- Microwave the red, white, and blue candy melts in separate bowls, starting with 1 minute, then stirring and continuing in 30-second intervals until silky smooth.
- Transfer each melted candy into small piping bags or zip-top bags with a tiny corner snipped off. Spread popcorn across a parchment-lined baking sheet and drizzle candy melts in artistic zigzags.
- While the candy is still gooey, quickly sprinkle on M&Ms and decorative sprinkles to ensure everything sticks before the candy hardens.
- Let the candy harden at room temperature for 15-20 minutes, or refrigerate for 10 minutes.
- Once set, break popcorn into clusters and serve in a big bowl or individual bags.
Notes
Use fresh kernels for the best texture, ensure melted candy is smooth, and consider variations like chocolate drizzle or adding nuts.
