Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 3 cups diced ham Use fully cooked ham with visible marbling for best flavor.
  • 6 large eggs Use large, fresh eggs for the best custard texture.
  • 1 cup milk Use room-temperature milk for smoother custard.
  • 4 cups bread cubes Stale or day-old bread is ideal; crusty bread works best.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Shred cheese from a block for best melt.
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese Mixing with cheddar balances flavor and stretch.
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard Adds tanginess to the custard.
  • Salt To taste.
  • Black pepper To taste.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter or spray a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Scatter the bread cubes evenly across the dish.
Custard Mixture
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
Layering
  1. Sprinkle the diced ham evenly over the bread cubes, then top with the shredded cheddar and mozzarella.
Soaking
  1. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and press gently to soak.
Baking
  1. Let the casserole rest for 10–15 minutes. Bake uncovered for 35–45 minutes until golden.
Serving
  1. Cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serve warm.

Notes

Let the bread sit with the custard for even hydration. Bake uncovered for a crisper top. Allow the casserole to cool slightly for better slicing.
